Mold is the number one enemy of front load washing machines. Because of the excess water inside the machine and on the rubber gasket of the door, molds develop. They like to grow in moist, dark and humid places.
If you have a washer in your RV, you have to be wary about the appearance of molds. The smell of molds can easily affect the interior of the RV. I am sure you wouldn’t like this to happen. That being said, you should use the following tips to prevent mold problems.
1. After doing your laundry, remove your moist clothes right away. Some people forget their laundry in the washer basket. They can turn moldy and musty in just a few hours. Try hanging your clothes to dry completely or put them in the dryer right away.
2. After washing, wipe the interior of the machine and the rubber gasket. Make sure you dry as many parts as you can. Even the slightest moisture can cause mold problems. Use an absorbent and clean dish rag to get rid of excess moisture.
3. At least once a month, run an empty hot water cycle and add a cup of distilled white vinegar and a cup of baking soda. White vinegar can actually loosen up molds and minerals in the pipes and the pump of the machine so water can easily flush them out of the washer.
Baking soda can effectively diffuse smell. It helps ward off unwanted moldy smell in your laundry machine. When using baking soda, make sure you are setting up the water temperature to the highest setting so they can be dissolved properly.
4. You might want to leave the front door of the laundry appliance open for at least an hour. This will allow air to circulate inside the drum and the pipes. If there is lingering moisture inside your washer, air can dry that up immediately.
5. Try mixing a cup of lemon juice and two cups of water. Place the cleaning solution in a spray bottle. If your washer usually has moldy rubber gasket problems, spray this cleaning solution on the affected areas. Let it stay there for about an hour before wiping them off.
The juice of lemon works just as well as vinegar in removing molds. Moreover, it leaves a nice and clean scent behind in your washer. It deodorizes your laundry appliance.
